On this episode of The Afrocentric Social Worker Podcast I talk with nationally and internationally recognized author, researcher and fellow Social Worker, Dr. Joy Degruy. She discusses her work and book Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America's Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing.

I've been talking to a lot of you about the way forward for the black community in the wake of Covid-19 and our continuous trauma of either hearing about or watching the death of black people on TV.  Many of you were not familiar with the work of Dr. Joy Degruy nor had you been introduced to her research in your undergrad or graduate level Social Work programs.

This is problematic because we can't fix something that we don't understand. If we don't have an appropriate Afrocentric orientation toward our problems, we will continue to use Eurocentric models to fix them. Dr. Joy's book should be required reading for any Social Worker who plans to work within the African American community.

I hope you are able to learn and grow from this episode and develop a greater understanding of the 4 concepts that Dr. Joy Degruy shares in her book.

1. Vacant Esteem

2. Ever present anger

3. Racial Socialization

4. Respect

In This Episode, Here's What We'll Cover:

  • The harm and consequence of continuing to operate with a system of racism/white supremacy without understanding our historical oppression

  • Are Black people making excuses for our condition in society?

  • Writings, research and programs that we should be advocating for, using Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome as an explanatory theory

  • Understanding "appropriate adaptation while living in a hostile environment"

  • The importance of understanding our Maafa (our African Holocaust)  and the continued injury to African descendants of American chattel slavery
